Proven Tips on How to Overcome Fear

Below are some exercises and tips to help you overcome your fears.

List out Things You Are Afraid to Do

One of the basics of how to overcome fear is to take note of the things you are afraid to do. These are things like swimming, skydiving, fear of heights, and fear of talking to ladies, and many more like that. You can also list out things such as going back to school, leaving my job, talking to your spouse about our relationship, asking for a raise, and so on.

For example:

“I want to start my e-commerce business, and I scare myself by imagining that I might go bankrupt and lose all my assets.”

By listing out these things you can see how you are the one creating your fears by imagining negative outcomes in the future.

Take Control over Your Fears

Now let’s take the fearful outcome you imagined and transform it into something positive. See the example below:

For instance:

“Rather of scaring myself by assuming that I will go bankrupt and lose my asset, I will work hard to do whatever it takes to make my e-commerce business a success.”

Now you see how the statements flip the fear on its head and transform it into a compelling positive vision?

I urge you to try this for yourself and transform your fears into empowering visions of success!

Be Realistic About Risk

Another way to overcome fear is to make sure you do risk more than you can afford to lose. To develop and achieve greater success, you need to risk something thing. Just ensure that you can bear the loss in the event that you don’t succeed the first time. My advice is to start by taking on little challenges and work your way up.

If you would like to start your business, but you will need a guaranteed income each month to cover your mortgage and stay away from debt, maybe run your company as a side gig until you have enough customers to quit your job for good.

A person who wants to run a marathon should start slowly with a simple step. Master the necessary skills and move through his/her fears and then take on more significant challenges.

Be More Mindful of Your Thoughts

This is another essential advice on how to overcome your fears. Thoughts produce emotions – so if you want to alter how you feel, change your thoughts. Once you feel fear, retrace your mental steps, and observe what you were thinking.

Think about what ideas led to your feelings of fear? When you identify them, it will be easier to resolve them.

Learn To Think More Positively

The Law of Replacement dictates that you cannot replace “something” with “nothing.” Therefore, you can’t get rid of negative thoughts merely by not thinking them– you have to replace it with something else.

Hence when you notice yourself experiencing a negative, fearful thought, replace it with positive thinking instead.

For instance, a person who wants to become military personnel, be on the lookout for thoughts like, “What if I can’t make it through the rigorous training?

Alternatively, visualize what will happen if you complete the training and become an officer in the military.

Notice the Effects of Fearful thinking

Observe the physical sensations you have whenever you think fearfully. You may feel fear being a sinking feeling in your belly, a tightening in your arms and chest, or an elevated heart rate.

Notice what you’re feeling and then consciously replace them with pleasant sensations you want to be experiencing. Focus on how good thoughts, such as peace and joy that comes from winning. Imagine yourself experiencing those sensations, and your fears will be neutralized.

Use Positive Affirmations

Positive affirmations are one of the best ways to overcome fear. They are used to create a more positive, success-oriented mindset. These are authoritative statements that express the reality you want to create – and they are a potent antidote to fear.

Here are some instances of positive affirmations you can use to overcome fear:

“Why will this work?”

“What if this does work?”

“How will it work?”

Here’s how they work: Imagine the truth you need to create then form a positive declaration that describes it as being achieved. For instance: “I am so happy and grateful now that I will be a New York Times bestselling author.”

Your subconscious doesn’t like this tension and can start to work overtime to resolve it, prompting you to take more action and become more aware of resources that will help you achieve your objective. By stating it as being achieved, you produce a tension between everything you are saying and experiencing actually, and what your mind knows to be real.

Shift your questions to focus more on action and solutions, and you will find it more comfortable to sustain your forward momentum.

Celebrate Your Successes

Celebrating your successes helps to overcome fear in life. As an adult, you must have overcome countless fears to be that person you are now, whether it was learning to drive a car, or asking your girlfriend out on a date. It is always scary to take risks or to open yourself to new experiences. However, you build up confidence in your abilities when you face your fears and take bold steps.

You now know how to overcome your fears because you have faced difficult situations in the past and overcome.  You have spent a lifetime doing it! So I urge you to follow Emerson’s advice and do the thing you fear. That is the way to grow as a person and achieve more success in life. All successful people I know took bold steps even though they were scared. They knew the opportunity would pass them by if they didn’t act. We create our fear and have the power to overcome it as well.
